ELVTD x Dillon Butcher - Winter Weekends

Friday rolls around and I was looking for a place to shoot during the weekend. I gave Dillon a call to see if he would be down to get after it on the Island, he said he was so I packed up my gear and made tracks towards the ferry. No time to waste, the boat docks in Nanaimo at 8:30 PM and Dillon is already parked in the passenger pick up area. I hop in the 04 Tacoma, and we’re off into the night searching for some urban type, street steez shots.

We roll into the down town core to begin our hunt. Crisp winds were blowing through and snow was banked up everywhere. The temperature was probably sitting around -2 degrees (Celsius) but it felt like -20. I knew of a parkade that had some potential so we decided to start our night there. We rolled up, snagged some shots and moved on.

We cruised up to the main street which runs through the down town core, the one with all the cool local shops. We were hoping that the lights from the store front signs would illuminate the streets making for some moody photos. We didn’t take into account that it was Friday night and there would be drunk club goers scattered about, those mid night zombies. We were getting skunked with shots so we decided to dip out of the scene and head to an area that we knew would have no people around.

We came across this old monument, one that I’ve walked past a million times but have never looked twice at. There was a spot light shining up on the piece, we decided to try and make something happen with it. This led to us capturing the photo of the night, we were stoked.

After this we decided to call it a night, we wanted to get some rest so we could get up early the next day and head out to a favorite dirt jump spot.

Saturday morning rolls around, Dillon and I meet up at Calvin Huth’s house. We downed a quick breakfast prepared by Chef Huth, then headed north to the jump spot. The trails, forest’s floor, and canopy were covered in snow. The scene was looking nice, but we had to scrape off the snow and ice from the line before Dillon would be able to ride. It took us about 2 hours to clean everything up, Dillon padded up and it was time to shoot.

After a few warm up laps the session was on. It was cold and windy, the all around riding conditions weren’t that great but Dillon hustled through it in order the get the shots we wanted. The results were worth it.
